Board of Directors Meeting: Thursday, December 20, 2007 at 6:30 p.m.
in the New Brighton Family Service Center, New Brighton, MN.
Address: IYHA, PO Box 120114, New Brighton, MN   55112 Website: www.iyhaleague.org

From President (Tom Lucarelli):

Hello –

Finally -- a Minnesota winter! Hopefully I didn’t jinx that thought. With a little luck, the outdoor rinks will be ready for skating and games shortly. Encourage your son or daughter to go and skate -- play pick up games with no rules - go out and have fun and be creative.

A special thanks to Cheryl Mason and the IYHA tournament committee for the outstanding organization and running of the Thanksgiving Spectacular. Also thank you to the IYHA members for their volunteer efforts and to the volunteers from the Mounds View Youth Hockey Association.

Another big thanks is due to Torri Johnson for her work on the IYHA website. Keeping up to date with the events, team functions and links to other IYHA happenings has certainly been helpful.

As I have indicated before, please bring forth your ideas and share them. IYHA benefits the more everyone is involved.

That’s all for now. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

See you at the rink.

Tom

From Website Administrator (Torri Johnson):

Website Tips:
1)  Download your schedule!  You can download your schedule right into your calendar software (Apple iCal, Mozilla Calendar & Sunbird, Korganizer, Ximian Evolution, Lotus Notes and Microsoft Outlook).  Go to your team's schedule and there is a download link at the top.  Click on the blue question mark for step by step instructions.  You can also download multiple schedules from the Multi-Schedule page.
2)  Team Home Pages - each team has their own home page.  It is along the top bar of the website called Our Teams.  You can see your teams schedule/calendar, roster, team messages, team documents, and team pictures, and team sponsors.  If you have your own Irondale website account, you will be able to see your teams information in detail.  If you do not have your own account, use the Team Password (given to each Team Manager) to access the information.
3)  New tabs across the top of the website have been created for Team Treasurers and Team Managers.  There is a lot of information in there that is useful for everyone.
4)  Clock Simulator - There is a working model of the clocks used at the SuperRink that you can practice at home and learn to run the clock for your team and for tournaments!  Look in the “Hey Coach” area along the left hand side of the home page.  There are instructions, also.
5)  Printout of area rinks with directions - Go to Area Rinks along the left hand side.  Click on the column heading for Name.  The list of area rinks will re-sort by name.  Click on "Printable Directory" at the top and print it out to keep in your car.
6)  Sponsorship Report - a new report has been posted that shows the sponsors how effective their sponsorship is on our website.  Please share this with your team sponsors.  It is located in the Documents section along the left hand side of the home page and is called Sponsorship Report 2007-2008.

From Boys Coordinator (Mark Mohar):

Congratulations to Samantha Donovan (Peewee) and Joe Norton (Bantam) for shooting 20,000 pucks this past summer.  Also, congratulations to Megan Gjere (Irondale Girls Varsity/14U) for shooting 10,000 pucks this summer.  Samantha led the way with over 42,000 pucks shot over the course of five months! For their hard work on accomplishing this milestone, Samantha and Joe will be receiving 20,000 Puck Club sweatshirts.  Megan will receive a 10,000 Puck Club t-shirt.

Reminder:

IYHA is offering (free) goalie clinics this year for all of our team goalies.  The sessions will be run by Justin Bjork, the Irondale High School Goalie Coach.  Each 2 hour session will work on the fundamentals, positioning and mental aspects of the game. All goalies from initiation, girls and boys programs are encouraged to attend.

Irondale Youth Hockey Association October Board Meeting Minutes:

IYHA Meeting Annual Meeting:  November 15, 2007Note: These minutes have not been approved. They will be reviewed, corrected as needed, and approved at the next regular Board of Directors Meeting.

IYHA Board Minutes of November 2007

The meeting was called to order at 6:37 p.m. by President Tom Lucarelli.

Board members present: Tom Lucarelli, Cheryl Mason, Mike Nundahl, Tom O’Keefe, Jeanne Falconer, Chris Drews, Mark Mohar

Board members absent: Bob Gabler, Jackie Rog, Tom Johnson, Jean Aukee

Guests: Brian Johnson, Paul Dulin

Tom O. brought up the suggestion that was made earlier about having the minutes go out to the board members for proof reading before being sent to the membership. Approval would still take place at the board meeting. It was agreed to do so.

There were 2 minor corrections to the October minutes. TO made a motion to accept the minutes as corrected. CD seconded that motion and it unanimously passed.

Old Business: None

Goalie Training: Dates are 12/8, 1/18 and 2/2 – a total of 6 hours. The instructor will be Justin Bjork who is the IHS goalie coach.   Will probably divide it up so 1 hour will be the younger goalies and 1 hour will be the older goalies. Would like to get appreciation gifts for those running the clinic and helping out. The shooters are IHS players. The total of the gifts would be around $100. CM made a motion to go ahead with this. TO seconded the motion and it unanimously passed. This will come under player development and the money will come out of that account. The schedule will go out in a week or so.

KUDOS to Torri Johnson for her work on the website. The guidelines, privacy statements, etc. will be discussed and up for approval next month.

Tom L. - From Pete Carlson regarding the Herb Brooks Training Center – the cost is now $6600. The board doesn’t want to endorse the Herb Brooks center. The information will be thrown out to the teams – especially that the teams would be paying for any time that they use the facility. The cost will lower once our coaches have gone through the HB training because the HB staff wouldn’t be running any of the sessions.33 sessions at 1.5 hours each. A commitment is needed. Would need an 8 team commitment. Teams could be combined with total not to exceed approximately 18.

There was discussion on what to do about those families that haven’t finished paying their registration fees. Also discussed was what to do about the families that haven’t given their volunteer deposit. These need to be paid or the player faces not being able to skate. A plan was put forth by TO.

The service agreement contract for Tadd Tuomie was read and discussed. There were a couple minor changes in the wording made. MM made a motion to accept the contract with the changes. JRseconded the motion and it was unanimously passed.

There was discussion regarding scheduling ice, tournaments, etcApparently the reasons for the district scheduling the games were to create more back to back games with hours together and create a feeling of unity within the association/district. This is suspicious because D1 is run by referees.

The IHS Girls have asked for $100 for an ad for their program. We gave the same to the Boys. TO made a motion to give $100 to the Girls for an ad in their program with MN seconding the motion. It passed unanimously.
Report from Tom L. regarding the fund raising committee: Rich Sonterre and the fund raising committee suggest that IYHA join the Chamber of Commerce for a cost of $165. This would provide many more contacts and costs less than a mass mailing. It was agreed to join the Chamber. Motioned by TO and seconded by CM. Passed unanimously. Would like to get a 2 year commitment from the fund raising committee and would like it to meet once per month like the board does. There are 3 people now and would like to see it up to 5. Tom L. would be the contact between the committee and the board. Ideas were bounced around – some of them are – IYHA needs corporate sponsors to assist in getting jerseys and it would be okay to put the corporations’ name on the jerseys. Doing the Schwanns sales again was discussed. Paul Dulin volunteered to be on the fundraising committee if he has time. Another suggestion was an association wide garage sale. It would be best to get started with requesting donations at the first of each year when the new budgets are out and there is more money available. It was also mentioned about a percentage of team fundraising go to the association for it’s assistance fund.

There was some discussion regarding the volunteer slots.

Tom O. and Tom L. will work with a committee to help select a new auditor – perhaps this would turn into an audit committee. It would make recommendations and look at the books each month. He will ask Jean to send out an e-mail to the association soliciting assistance with this.

The budget was handed out along with the checkbook spreadsheet and discussion followed.

Mark M. – tryouts are complete – the process went very well. There should be a check coming back from Red Wing as there is a conflict with that tournament and the district festival.

Mike N. – teams are playing – there have been a couple wins. I’d like to thank Jackie - Received many compliments on the scheduling of ice from parents and coaches. Sweatshirts “Knights Hockey” will be made available to the U8/Intitation program.

Chris D. – Not able to make the district meeting. Just remember to send all scores to  The final schedule is on the D1 website. IYHA owes the district about $9100. $4147.50 is for games. There is a new rule in D1 – mouth guards must be attached to the helmets.

There was some discussion regarding the late Bantam tryouts and how to improve things next year for all tryouts.

Jeanne – there are about the same number of kids actively skating as were skating last year, but the numbers aren’t final yet. Initiation players are accepted by the district through the middle of February. The idea and plan is to get kids on the ice and to come back next year. There is a problem with the boundaries, in that the Affiliation Agreement must be located as it clearly defines the boundaries between IYHA and MVYHA. The school boundaries have changed and are on the ISD 621 website. The school boundaries include a corner of Roseville and a corner of Blaine. I have not been able to get a satisfactory answer about the clearly defined boundaries from the people I have asked. Will pursue this. We know of 2 families that skated for IYHA last year and have registered with MVYHA this year.

Mike N. for Tom J. – needs to increase budget by $400 for miscellaneous equipment. MN made a motion to increase the equipment budget by $400, CM seconded the motion and it unanimously passed. Some teams want helmet hats. Can use extra pullovers or buy them themselves.

Mark M. – really need to start looking at getting new jerseys. Need to set the color standard again. Right now it is black (helmets and breezers). The high school has gone back to gold helmets and maroon breezers. Would start with the Initiation – that as new equipment is purchased it would conform to a new color standard.

Player and Coach development – player clinics have started. We will be adding goalie clinics as stated earlier. IYHA is fortunate to have Justin Bjork (high school goalie coach), Phil DeKanick (former IYHA goalie and high school goalie) and Thomas Bastion who is rostered on the PeeWee Cs.

Lake Region has not met yet – will meet on the 22nd.

MN made a motion to adjourn and CM seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned.

I now have the Lake Region Report –
New site – Katies on 96 and Lexington. Bingo on Monday and meat raffle on Wed. at 5:00. Seems to be going well. Please patronize. Will be getting another new site - hopefully Dec. 1st at Our Bar and Grill in New Brighton – County Road E &10th????? Ave. Behind the condos on Old 8 near E. Please patronize. With the set up of 2 places – each in the area of $10,000, there is no money to donate. New sellers need to be hired. The thought of volunteers from the associations selling bingo cards at Champps, Moe’s and Katie’s was brought up. The IHS Boys high school team, represented by Coach Martin, the 3 captains and Jerry Batcha the Blueline Club president made an appearance at the meeting to thank LR for its past support and continued support. They told about the fund raising that they do and what the money goes for – like new helmets and bags this year. Champps has been doing well. Moe’s has been struggling. Up to $4000 has been designated to each association when it’s available. Up to $500 to each (boys and girls) high school hockey team has been designated when it’s available. Pat O’Connor was voted in as the new IYHA member at large. Another long standing IYHA member at large announced her resignation, so we are in need of a new member at large. LR meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month.
Encourage people to write, call or e-mail the state politicians regarding the exorbitant taxes on pull tabs. If a game costs $486, the tax is the same whether or not it is ever opened and played. So it costs double to purchase a game. There are more taxes also.
